Peter Sagan wheelied across the finish line after bursting clear of fellow leader Sep Vanmarcke on the Paterberg to solo to his first Monument win at the Tour of Flanders.
The world champion, despite multiple top-tens and his victory in Richmond in September, had never topped the podium in any of the WorldTour’s five biggest one-day Classics.
But a superb acceleration changed all that, ensuring the 26-year-old has now won three of the four UCI WorldTour cobbled Classics – E3 Harelbeke, Gent-Wevelgem and the Ronde.
