High – 2012
Possibly the most memorable year in British sporting history followed, with Wiggo at the heart of it.
Another Criterium du Dauphine win, following victories at Paris-Nice and the Tour de Romandie, saw Wiggins – who had committed fully to the road in the Olympic year – start the Tour de France as favourite.
And the sideburn-clad mod of British cycle sport won the hearts of the nation as he lived up to that billing in some style.
After taking over the maillot jaune on La Planche des Belles Filles, Wiggins won both individual time trials to storm to the yellow jersey.
He took that form against the clock into the Olympic Games to win gold before being crowned Sports Personality of the Year and receiving a knighthood to cap a remarkable 12 months – Wiggo’s annus mirabilis.
