Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins to ride World Championship Madison

Manxman also set for omnium after making 21-strong Great Britain squad for London event

Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins will reunite for the Madison at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London at the start of the next month.

Cavendish, fresh from his Tour of Qatar win on the road, has been selected in Great Britain’s 21-strong squad for the event at the Lee Valley VeloPark, which runs from Wednesday March 2 to Sunday March 6.

And the Manxman will compete in both the omnium and the Madison in London, pairing up with Wiggins as they bid to replicate their 2008 World Championship success in the latter event.

Eight riders have been selected in the men’s endurance squad in all, including fit-again Ed Clancy – who, alongside Jon Dibben, are the other riders in contention with Cavendish for an Olympic omnium spot.

Owain Doull, Chris Latham and former world champions Andy Tennant and Steven Burke complete the men’s endurance line-up.

They’ll be joined in London by a six-strong women’s endurance squad, with Katie Archibald also back from injury and available for selection.

The Scottish ace is joined by Olympic champions Joanna Rowsell Shand and Laura Trott, Welsh duo Elinor Barker and Ciara Horne and teenager Emily Nelson.

Having got back to winning ways at the final UCI Track World Cup event in Hong Kong, Jason Kenny, Philip Hindes and Callum Skinner are joined in the men’s sprint squad by Matt Crampton.

And the Great Britain squad is completed by their female counterparts, Jessica Varnish, Katy Marchant and Becky James.

Technical director Shane Sutton said of the selection: “We’ve selected the strongest squad available to us for these worlds – we’re in good shape and the team we’ve selected is close to the Olympic model.

“It’s great to see Ed Clancy and Katie Archibald included on the squad and that’s testament to the hard work of the Performance Support Team who have ably led the rehabilitation of these riders following their respective injuries.

“Winning is always a key objective for any sports team and we’re sticking to our long-term goal which is success at the Olympic Games in Rio so we’ll be making performance decisions based on this strategy.

“That said, there’s been a marked increase in momentum within the squad recently and we’ve been seeing some promising numbers in training, so I’m expecting to see some strong performances across the board and spectators will be guaranteed to see some world-class competition.”

A limited number of tickets still remain for the event, which are available at www.trackcyclingworlds2016.london.
