Peter Kennaugh
Peter Kennaugh was bitterly disappointed to be left out of Team Sky’s Tour de France line-up and the Manxman sent a message to his employers by winning the 2014 British national road race title and the Tour of Austria.
Riding in the colours of the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Games, Kennaugh has already won points race silver on the track, his nation’s first medal in Glasgow, and will now turn his attention to the road.
Kennaugh finished fourth when the 2013 British national road race championships were held in Glasgow in 2013 but, with the winner that day, and his Isle of Man compatriot, Mark Cavendish sidelined through injury, the 25-year-old will lead the charge.
Kennaugh will need to ride an aggressive race to ditch the fast men but the Douglas-born rider showed his tenacity in an attritional sprint with victory over Ben Swift, who would normally be considered the quicker of the two in a dash for the line, to win the national road race title at the end of June.
