Qatar hosts this year’s UCI Road World Championships, with the time trials getting the action started in the desert next week.
Team time trials take place over the weekend, before the individual time trials at the start of next week, where national champions Scott Davies (men’s under-23), Alex Dowsett (elite men) and Hayley Simmonds (elite women) will be among those flying the British flag.
In the elite races, a stellar line-up has been attracted to Doha, despite concerns about heat in Qatar, with a pan-flat time trial course awaiting the women.
Simmonds will compete against the likes of Olympic bronze medallist Anna van der Breggen (Netherlands) on the technical, but totally flat 28.9km course.
In the men’s race, meanwhile, a different course will be used – again it’s technical, with no less than eleven 90-degree bends and three U-turns – with Dowsett up against the likes of defending champion Vasil Kyrienka (Belarus), three-time former winner Tony Martin (Germany) and big favourite Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands).
Eurosport will be showing the best of the action this week, and if work commitments get in your way, there’s regular evening highlights too.
