Andalucia, Spain
Andalucia is another popular training camp destination, with LottoNL-Jumbo having setup camp in Mojacar this year.
World number one team Movistar also headed to Almeria in 2014, sowing the seeds for a stunning year which saw Nairo Quintana win the Giro d’Italia and Alejandro Valverde top the world rankings.
Logistics mean the Spanish team will be heading to Mallorca this time out, timed to coincide with Challenge Mallorca, but Movistar staff member Daniel Sanchez believes Andalucia is among the best areas to ride in Spain.
“From what we experienced there in 2014, we were extremely happy with what we found,” he said.
“Probably what makes Almeria the best zone to train in Spain is that you can find every terrain you want – flat roads, hills or long climbs, there is everything.
“The weather is mild and often sunny during winter, too.”
And we’d be inclined to agree having chosen Mojacar and Andalucia as our training camp base in 2014.
