Laura Trott – women’s omnium
British champion on the road, Laura Trott raced to her third straight world championship silver medal in the women’s omnium.
Though Sarah Hammer’s stranglehold on the event was ended, it was Annette Edmondson who stormed to gold to follow her part in the Australian team pursuit success.
Trott, however, insists she is happy with her progress having recovered from finishing 14th in the scratch race to claim second ahead of Kirsten Wild (Netherlands).
That it was the bunch race which let Trott down again shows where the work needs to be done between now and Rio but – as the 22-year-old Essex rider was keen to point out – four years ago she was well outside the world medals and went on to take gold in London 18 months later.
While she was unable to save Great Britain’s World Championships on the final day in Paris, silver is a mark that Trott is still very much in contention to defend her Olympic title in Rio.
Trott remains Great Britain’s undoubted star of the track, and nobody will be writing her off.
