Rising British star James Shaw to turn pro with Lotto-Soudal

Nottingham-born 20-year-old signs two-year deal after impressing at Tour of Britain

Young British rider James Shaw will step up to the WorldTour in 2017, after agreeing his first professional contract with Lotto-Soudal.

Shaw, 20, will sign with the Belgian team as a neo-pro next season after impressing as a stagiaire in the latter part of 2016, including riding the Tour of Britain, having previously been with the Lotto-Soudal Under-23 team.

A former winner of the junior Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne race, and top-five finisher in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege U23 edition earlier this year, Shaw has signed a two-year deal with Lotto-Soudal.

He becomes the first British rider to ride full-time with the long-established, Belgian lottery-backed team since current British champion Adam Blythe left in 2011 and only the third since the team formed in 1995 – Charly Wegelius being the other.

And Shaw hopes, after enjoying his first taste of riding with a WorldTour team, the next few years will help shape him as a rider.

“It’s an incredible feeling to become pro,” he said. “It’s still is a bit surreal, but I’m really looking forward to flying the Lotto Soudal flag as a pro next year.

“The past years I really felt home in the U23 team and I am glad I can stay with Lotto Soudal.

“I enjoyed my time as a trainee in the WorldTour team and I’m so glad I will be riding for it the next two years.

“The traineeship was already a good introduction. I will certainly do my best.

“I am a bit of a puncher and rouleur, but as a 20-year-old I don’t want to say yet how I’ll spend the rest of my career. The next years I want to discover more about myself.”

Shaw is one of the riders proving the British Cycling Academy Programme is not the only pathway to success for a young Brit, and becomes the latest Dave Rayner Fund recipient to step up to the top tier, having been given a chance to ride abroad by the charity.

And Lotto-Soudal team manager Marc Sergeant is excited by Shaw’s talent, having been impressed by his work at the Tour of Britain.

“He participated in the Tour of Britain and in a race of that level you immediately know what someone is worth,” Sergeant said.

“James did very well during that race and the team was very satisfied. He mainly had a supporting role and that will also be the case next year.”
