Sixty minutes: why Spartacus no longer fancies the hour record…and why Wiggo does

Fabian Cancellara shelves attempt for now, but could Sir Bradley Wiggins be tempted?

Sir Bradley Wiggins’ interest in a record attempt shouldn’t come as any surprise.

Time trial specialist on the road, multiple Olympic champion on the track, and a keen student of the history of the sport, Wiggins appears to have the perfect CV to attempt the prestigious sixty-minute challenge.

The Brit confirmed his interest after his Tour of California success and while Cancellara wants to compare himself against Merckx, Wiggins wants to see how he stacks up against Miguel Indurain, who recorded 53.040km in 1994.

“I’d like to do it. For me, the last person to do it in that [track] position was Tony Rominger and Miguel Indurain.”

“And I’ve always said that I’d love to go for it just to compare myself to Indurain purely over an hour. So I would consider it now, actually.”
