Veterans of the Maratona dles Dolomites sportive will be well aware of the slopes of the Passo Giau, a climb which has also made regular appearances in the Giro d’Italia.
Set against the stunning rugged backdrop of the Dolomites, the climb is a little more than ten kilometres in length and starts as it means to go on, pitching up steeply from the off.
The average gradient of nine per cent holds its form for much of the way up, with the stunning landscape in complete contrast to the brutality of the climb.
In 2013 the climb – which peaks at 2,236m – formed part of the crucial penultimate stage of the Giro, on which Vincenzo Nibali all-but-sealed overall success.
