The 2014 Tour de France may only officially have one individual time trial but Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) ensured stage nine became a race against the clock of his own with a superb solo victory.
The three-time world time trial champion joined Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale Pro Cycling) in the early break but dropped the Italian some 60km from the finish.
Martin then switched to time trial mode in a superb display of power to cross the line two minutes and 45 seconds before a large chasing group containing new race leader Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Belisol), with the peloton finishing a further five minutes later.
Here’s the best of the rider reaction from another memorable day at the 2014 Tour de France.
