Former British boxing champion killed in cycling crash

A cyclist killed in south London on Thursday has been identified as former British boxing champion Gary Mason.

The retired heavyweight fighter, 48, was involved in a collision with a van on Sandy Lane South, Wallington, at 6.15am and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and bailed until March.

Mason’s professional career spanned ten years from 1984 to 1994, fighting 38 times and winning 37 of his bouts. His only defeat came at the hands of future world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis when he challenged for the European title in 1991.
