The Department of Transport hopes to get more people on bicycles with the launch of the Cycle to Work Guarantee
70 major employers, including BSkyB, E.ON and GlaxoSmithKline, have signed up to the scheme to boost the number of people using bicycles to get to work. As part of the scheme these companies will agree to provide their staff with safe bike storage, changing facilities, cycling lessons and access to bike-repair facilities.
Transport secretary Lord Adonis says: “If proper facilities were more widely available, I believe far more people would cycle to work. At present only 3 per cent do so. We could double or treble that figure with proper bike storage and changing facilities and safe cycle routes – and that’s my aim.”
