Cowbells, tequila and waffles: Rapha Super Cross back with new Manchester date

Cowbells, foam, tequila, frites and waffles will all be back on the menu as the Rapha Super Cross Series returns – with entries now open.

And for the first time the series will visit Manchester, with fans and racers expected to descend on Philips Park – adjacent to the National Cycling Centre – on Sunday October 20.

The three-round series will also take in the picturesque Broughton Hall, Skipton, on Saturday October 19 and conclude as usual at the iconic Alexandra Palace, London, on Sunday October 27.

Novice races will once again feature the infamous tequila shortcut and wall of foam, as well as the new snail-shaped ‘spiral of doom’ course feature. Races will also be held for under-10/12, youth, junior, senior, veteran and female.

Women will also feature in elite line-ups for the first time as Britain’s best battle it out on the three courses, where the undefeated Hope Factory Racing will be bidding to defend their crown.

Spectators, for whom entry is free, will also be able to enjoy live music, food and children’s activities as they ring their cow bells.

Series director Ian Cleverly is relishing the opportunity to take the Rapha Super Cross to Manchester.

“We’re really excited about this one,” he said. “We were looking for a more urban setting and this park is perfect – right next to the famous velodrome and the heart of British Cycling.

“Phil Braybrooke has come up with a cracking course with a nasty little sting in its tail, the ‘Philips Berg’, leading up to the finish line.

“We are expecting a big crowd for this one and that will be a popular spot for spectators who like to witness suffering!”

Hope Factory Racing will bid to defend their overall team title in the elite races when the series concludes at the iconic Ally Pally Pic: Rapha

Last year’s elite series ended with Hope Factory Racing finishing level with Hargorves on points, with Hope taking the title on countback.

And Cleverly believes there could be more nail-biting action for spectators to enjoy this year.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it was that close again,” he said. “It’s going to be gripping stuff.”

The elite line-ups will be announced in the coming weeks, but entry for all other categories – which is in advance of race day only – is now open.
