On group rides, only shout when it's necessary
This one focuses on the annoying habit of group rides turning into yelling contests.
It’s good manners to point out any significant hazards to those behind you, especially ones at road level that riders towards the back won’t be able to see coming. But the key word there is ‘significant’. If you yell your head off every time there’s a tiny dimple in the road surface it’ll have two effects:
The first is that it’ll get really annoying after a while. Part of the beauty of cycling is being able to ride along and take what’s going on around you, or chat with the person riding next to you in a normal voice. If the group contains a few riders who shout all the time it ruins the ambiance and makes the ride less enjoyable.
The second reason is that if you keep crying wolf, alerting riders to the sort of bumps you could easily traverse with one hand on the bars and the other in your jersey pocket and still barely notice, people will stop listening. And that means that when the industrial size pothole looms into view, they’ll have zoned out your incessant drone and it’ll come as a nasty surprise.
