Five thousand riders have already signed up for the Tour of Cambridgeshire, the UK’s first continental-style closed road Gran Fondo race and sportive.
Taking place on the weekend of Saturday June 6 and Sunday July 7, the event also boasts a time trial – for which all 700 places sold out in within the first week of sales.
Entry for the closed-road sportive is still available, however, with space for 10,000 at the event – the race, which boasts a £1,500 first prize for the fastest man and fastest woman – will be seeded according to category, while the sportive follows the same closed roads later on.
Tom Caldwell, from organisers Vericool Sports Management, said: “The response to the UK’s first ever closed road Gran Fondo and UWCT time trial event has been tremendous.
“We were overwhelmed at the time trial selling out all 700 places in less than six days and with 5,000 places already taken on the closed road Gran Fondo it goes to show that UK cyclists are keen to sample what a real race/sportive gran fondo similar to the format already popular on mainland Europe is like.”
Both events start and finish at the Peterborough Arena – with free on-site parking available and a trade village setting up for the weekend.
The Gran Fondo starts at 12pm on Sunday June 7 and more details and entry can be found at www.tourofcambridgeshire.com.
