Sir Bradley Wiggins launches new 46-mile RideLondon sportive route

New route added to RideLondon weekend aimed at 'new or young riders'

Sir Bradley Wiggins has helped to officially launch the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 46 – a traffic-free 46-mile sportive aimed at young or new riders to run alongside the RideLondon 100.

This year’s Prudential RideLondon festival, which also includes the RideLondon-Surrey Classic men’s race and RideLondon GP, part of the Women’s WorldTour, takes place on Saturday July 30 and Sunday July 31.

The new 46-mile sportive will take place on the Sunday, starting out from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park immediately after the last riders for the 100 have set off.

The new RideLondon-Surrey 46 route offers a way into mass participation events for younger or newer riders

After leaving the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the sportive follows the same route as the RideLondon-Surrey 100 for the first 27 miles before a new two-mile stretch which links up with the last 17 miles through London to the grandstand finish on The Mall.

Created specifically for new and younger cyclists, with entries open to anybody aged 16 or older, the event hopes to encourage riders to enter their first mass participation cycling event and enjoy the traffic-free route in the capital.

“This is a fantastic event for new and young riders,” said Wiggins. “Forty-six miles is still a challenge but it’s also a great introduction to cycling on traffic-free roads and it’s a wonderful way to ride your first sportive.

“And nothing beats riding up The Mall and crossing the line in front of Buckingham Palace.”

Entry will be by public ballot, which is open now at www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk, and closes when 15,000 riders have registered – or on 28 April 2016. The ballot results will be announced before the end of May 2016, and entry is £39.
