Ffordd Penlech, Harlech
Ffordd Penlech in north Wales needs no other introduction than to announce its status as the steepest road in the UK.
Its 40 per cent maximum gradient is out of bounds for cyclists as it is one a one-way street, open to downhill traffic only.
Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped some riders, and plenty of Strava users, from pitting themselves against the short but definitely not sweet ascent of narrow tarmac – helped by the fact that cars tend to give the brake-smoking descent a wide berth.
An alternative unrestricted route up the hillside is also available, where the gradient is a mere 25 per cent.
