Pearl Izumi Tour Series 2014: Tobyn Horton sprints to Canary Wharf success

Rapha Condor JLT move closer to sealing overall victory

Tobyn Horton (Madison-Genesis) sealed his team’s first individual Pearl Izumi Tour Series at Canary Wharf, but it was Rapha Condor JLT who continued their dominance of this year’s events with another team win.

Guernsey-born Horton outsprinted a leading group of eight riders in the capital to earn the round win, with Chris Opie (Rapha Condor JLT) coming in second.

But with Felix English and Ed Clancy following the leading group over the finishing line, it was Rapha Condor JLT who earned their fifth team win of this year’s Series.

The eight-man leading group had earned an advantage on the fast-paced circuit of Canary Wharf, with James McCallum (NFTO) – who had earlier led out the neutralised lap after announcing his retirement – among them.

McCallum will retire from the sport after the Commonwealth Games, and ensured what will be his last Tour Series appearance was one to remember.

Joined by Horton, Opie, Alex Paton (Pedal Heaven Colbornes), Marcin Bialoblocki and George Harper (Node4-Velosure), Matthew Gibson (Great Britain) and Yanto Barker (Team Raleigh), the lead group was left to contest the round after a blisteringly fast hour of racing.

Kristian House (Rapha Condor JLT) had also spent a lot of time in the lead group, scooping the night’s sprint prize, but it was Horton who was fastest on the final lap.

And Rapha Condor JLT are likely to have even more to celebrate with just rounds in Woking and a Jersey double-event to come.

The ‘Men in Black’ have not worn their traditional jerseys since round two, replacing them with the leaders’ jerseys, and they boast an 18-point advantage with just a maximum 36 more to play for.

Highlights of the Canary Wharf event are on ITV4 at 10pm on Friday 6th June, with a repeat on Saturday 7th June at 8.35am, and will be available on the ITV Player online for 30 days after broadcast.
