For 2016, Shimano have added four new models to their road range in an all new category dubbed ‘road performance’: the RP9, RP5, RP3 and RP2.
All four are performance shoes and are designed to bridge the gap between competitive level performance and those new to cycling. In fact, they’ve been designed with the sportive rider in mind and Shimano say they bring an optimal balance of speed, rigidity and all-day comfort to the table.
All four are designed around Shimano’s Dynalast shape and have durable synthetic leather finishes. The RP9 follows the design of the range-topping pro level R321 shoes, with a similar one-piece upper and a sole that hits 11/12 on Shimano’s own stiffness scale.
It also features an anti-bacterial insole along with multiple vents on the front and sole of the shoe and a claimed weight of 538g per pair for a size 40. It’ll be available in euro sizes 36-50, including half sizes between 37-47, and wide sizes between 36-48.
Down from that is the RP5, which changes out the carbon sole for a glass fibre reinforced nylon platform, while still offering a lot of the features of it’s bigger brother. The RP3 and RP2 shoes aim to bring top performance at more entry-level prices meanwhile.
Shimano also have a brand new women’s-specific shoe, the WR84. It’s designed with a similar stylish look to both the R321 and RP9, but with a female-specific last taking into account the difference between men and women’s feet.
The WR84 is contoured with a narrower heel cup, added support in the instep, a narrower overall profile and lower volume toe box, aiming to give the same comfort and performance for women as the RP range will for men.
The road performance range currently has an availability date of October 2015 and prices are to be confirmed.
