BMC’s revamped Timemachine time trial/triathlon bike to debut in Qatar

Swiss firm launch latest iteration of aero TT bike; Cervelo showcase radical P5X tri bike

BMC’s time trial/triathlon bike, the TimeMachine, has been given an update ahead of the UCI Road World Championships and Iron Man World Championships.

Though primarily a triathlon bike, the Timemachine’s geometry can be adjusted via BMC’s ‘Position to Perform’ (PSP) tech, ensuring it can be ridden in a UCI legal position for time trialling.

The bike is a collaboration between BMC and Formula One experts Sauber Engineering, and is said to be designed to marry speed and efficiency.

BMC’s road product manager Mart Otten explains: “The new Timemachine is the benchmark for time-trial bikes. In its development, instead of putting the time-triallist in focus like its predecessors, we gave priority to triathletes.”

Sauber’s input has seen BMC overhaul their SubA aerodynamics concept, with a new focus on superior tube shaping and component integration.

Such integration includes the third generation of BMC’s hinge-fork, alongside hidden brake calipers, internal cable routing and new hidden seat clamp to eke out every advantage against the wind.

A V-Cockpit is also supplied with all complete builds, to offer optimal aerodynamic performances with taller pad stack dimensions.

To ensure the bike is UCI compliant for time triallists,  it is as simple as changing the seatpost to the rear-mount option.

There will be two versions of gthe frame on offer – the Timemachine 01, available with Dura-Ace Di2, SRAM Red eTap or Ultegra Di2, and the Timemachine 02, available with Ultegra Di2, Ultegra and 105 groupsets, and featuring a more traditional cockpit setup.

Could Cervelo’s P5X triathlon bike be a sign of what to expect in the future?

BMC’s Timemachine follows the traditional geometry of a time trial/triathlon bike – hence being legal for this week’s UCI Road World Championships, once the seatpost and saddle position has been adjusted.

But with the UCI rumoured to be considering relaxing the rules governing tube shape and dimensions, Cervelo’s new, radical P5X triathlon bike could be a sign of the future.

Three years in design has resulted in the head-turning machine, which – for triathletes at least – features Smartpak, Stealthbox and Speedcase components for storage in long-distance events.

Cervelo insist, however, the bike has been built purely for triathletes, and a new bike would be designed purely to accommodate time triallists should the UCI change those rules on TT bikes.
