20’s Plenty for Us is an organisation dedicated to campaigning for the introduction of a default 20mph speed limit on residential roads in the UK. This would not include arterial urban roads, which would have a 30mph limit, or other roads where a higher speed limit has been chosen.
Already in the UK, according to 20’s Plenty for Us, some 3 million people live in areas with 20 mph speed limits where experience shows that, not only do slower speeds save lives, but lowering the limit to 20 mph improves the way local streets function in many more ways. The change is said to have produced wide-ranging benefits, including less traffic, an increase in walking and biking, greater independence for children, the elderly and infirm, better public health and calmer driving conditions for motorists.
