Let’s cut to the chase. For the price – £34.99 on www.ridebosh.com – these winter bib tights from Ride, a new company based near the South Downs, represent remarkable value.
The Super Roubaix construction means there’s a soft, fleecy lining to the brushed Lycra. So the tights are warm enough for most winter rides – bar the sub-zero cold snap we saw in early February – while, as it’s not the thickest Roubaix fabric we’ve seen, the tights also remain useful on chilly autumn and spring outings. While not windproof, the fabric provides an impressive amount of protection from the winter breeze.
The medium tights tested, designed in the UK and handmade in Italy, are spot on in terms of length for my 5’11” frame, with the snug multi-panel anatomic fit ensuring there’s no wrinkled material or excess bunched up on the legs, with silicon grippers around the ankles to hold everything in place. Front zips on bib tights may not be to everyone’s taste but the lock down zip on these tights provides extra abdominal protection from the wind, while mid-ride comfort stops remain easy.
Ride use Dr. Pad’s UFO MAN insert, which is designed for medium and long distance rides, for which it remained comfortable thanks to the countered, double layer construction.
Other detail includes a reflective Ride logo on the rear at the top of the right leg, plus there’s a reflective panel just behind the knee on both legs, while the mesh straps have plenty of stretch and provide ample support. All that makes for budget-busting bib tights which perform just as well as those double the price.
