Charge Spoon Cro-Mo saddle £19.99
Encouraged by the comfort of the Spoon Ti recently fitted to my Museeuw MF1, I took the wrapper off the second of the saddles from Charge Bikes on the Roadcycling UK test bench and gave it the very tall order of replacing my Brooks B17 Narrow on ‘Spalding’ , my ultra-stiff Alf Webb fixie.
Identical in construction to the Ti, with the exception of the steel rails, the Cro-Mo provides a medium wide perch at the back together with a nicely contoured nose providing good support and position. Weighing in at 270g, it’s finished in hard wearing grey fabric and scarlet Charge logo and, if grey isn’t your thing, it’s also available in black, tan or white.
A four hour ride in the Cotswolds on Spalding has me about to say what I thought previously…unthinkable. The Spoon Cro-Mo is staying on my bike in place of the Brooks, it really is that comfortable.
By far the Cro-Mo’s best bit, however, is the price. Since it retails at under £20, it’s hard to see why you’d want to use anything else, even the Spoon Ti, unless obsessive weight saving is your thing. Proof positive that you don’t have to break the bank to find a quality saddle.
