Team Sky ended day two of the Giro d’Italia with a rider in the maglia rosa – but not the man expected to challenge for the title over the course of the next three weeks.

Instead it was Salvatore Puccio, a 23-year-old Italian making his Grand Tour debut, who pulled on the leader’s jersey after Team Sky powered to team time trial victory on the island of Ischia.

Puccio crossed the line with Bradley Wiggins, Sergio Henao, Dario Cataldo and Rigoberto Uran, and the five Team Sky riders now occupy the top five positions in the general classification.

Victory for Team Sky and Wiggins sees the Tour de France champion earn small but valuable chunks of time over his rivals for the title, with Vincenzo Nibali’s Astana squad, Ryder Hesjedal’s Garmin-Sharp team and Cadel Evans’ BMC Racing finishing 14, 25 and 37 seconds behind Sky respectively.
