There are two safety concerns in cycling that will always spark a debate on RCUK – helmets and hi-vis. If you don’t believe in the latter, it’s probably best to click away now.
But a lot of people do – that’s why, if you commute by bicycle, you’re bound to see one of Respro’s Hump backpack covers.
We tested the Waterproof Hump (RRP £24.99), which is designed to cover a rucksack or pannier with a capacity of up to 40 litres. It’s a doddle to fit, with elasticated edging to ensure a snug fit, and two button-down straps on the other side to lock the cover in place. It also packs down pretty small if you want to throw it in the bag for a commute in daylight hours.
But, when the sun is down, there’s no doubting the Hump is a considerable weapon in any commuter’s armour. The hi-vis yellow stands out from the crowd, particularly during low light, while an abundance of Scotchlite – two vertical strips and five arrows – adds considerable visibility to any rider.
One other neat feature is the Velcro mesh pocket on the front for stashing small, quick-to-access items. But apart from that, that’s it – which is why the Hump works. It ensures your bag is dry and helps keep you seen.
