Seventeen-year old Student Tom Staniford was knocked off his bike by a car in June 2005 sustaining mutiple injuries. In his own words Tom tells RCUK why he is embarking on a 100km ride to raise funds for the Devon Air Ambulance.
“I live in Morchard Bishop, Nr. Crediton, Devon and I’m a 17-year old International Baccalaureate student at Exeter College. On June 2nd 2005 I was knocked off my bicycle by a car. I broke four ribs, collapsed a lung, broke a toe, broke a collarbone, cut my knees and forehead open, lost my front teeth and bruised my brain.”
“I was airlifted to our very own RD&E hospital (Heavitree) by the Devon Air Ambulance. I stopped breathing a number of times, had various operations and spent a week in the hospital’s ICU. I then spent the next 5 months performing physiotherapy (via turbo-trainer)on my badly-injured knees. Thankfully, they’ve healed very well.
Seven months ago I gradually began cycling again, trying to build up my leg muscles.
On September the 3rd of this year I will be attempting a solo 100km/60 mile bike ride along the A377 to raise funds for the Devon Air Ambulance. The distance in itself is not by any great shakes a challenge for the dedicated cyclist- but because I’m young and it is only really a year after nearly dying I’ve had to train really hard for it. I’m doing it for the Air ambulance; my reasoning being that if they can save my life, surely I can try and raise some money for them.”
