With temperatures now routinely struggling to reach double figures, and daylight all but gone by 4pm, cycling can seem like a less pleasurable option than it did in the heights of summer.
But the modern cyclist has never had it so good, with technical fabrics, motivational tools, easily maintained machines, ever more powerful lights, and the chance of escape within easy reach.
If our cycling forebears could brave a winter armed with little more than a sweaty rain cape, heavy woolen jersey, and thoughts of spring, we’re certain we can greet the change of the clock with sufficient mileage to, errm, spring into the new cycling season.
