Tour of Qatar: stage three – five observations

Michael Hepburn strives for marginal gains as he wins time trial

Stage three of the Tour of Qatar was just 10.9km long, but it looks set to have settled the general classification as Niki Terpstra (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) stretched his overall lead.

The race against the clock also gave us another chance to see what sort of form Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing) is in, while Michael Hepburn (Orica-GreenEDGE) ensured his debut outing in the jersey of Australian time trial champion was one to remember.

Once again, as with the Dubai Tour, the stage was raced on road bikes as opposed to the specialist time trial machines and it certainly sparked some creative thinking from Hepburn and co.
