Fabian Cancellara’s hour record attempt will not take place immediately after the Classics, Trek Factory Racing have confirmed.
Spartacus will bid to smash Czech giant Ondrej Sosenka’s 2005 mark of 49.7 kilometres later this year, with British legend – and former record holder – Chris Boardman among those backing him to break the record.
But though the attempt remains a ‘real project’ for the team, general manager Luca Guercilena has confirmed the search for a suitable date and location for the attempt remains ongoing.
Guercilena said: “We are working on this project since some time now and we have a series of people managing the project, including engineers at Trek Bicycle.
“However, there is no present-day reference for this kind of endeavor and we are still studying all of its facets.
“We are in discussions with several tracks around the world, and in terms of timing, I can only confirm that we are no longer considering the period after the Classics for an attempt.”
Cancellara is set to go wheel-to-wheel with Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) and Peter Sagan (Cannondale) in the Classics as he bids to defend the E3-Harelbeke, Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix victories he earned last year.
With Boonen, back from the injuries which hampered his 2013 season, keen to repeat his phenomenal 2012 clean sweep of the cobbled Classics, Cancellara is allaying any thoughts of the hour record for the time being.
Guercilena added: “The focus for Fabian is now fully on the Classics and an attempt to repeat the success of last year.
“After Paris-Roubaix, we’ll turn our attention to the hour record and we will have more details.”
