4. Data
The Edge 1000 continues to provide a wealth of data.
Metrics includes variations of speed, altitude, calories, distance, time, temperature, power, heart rate, cadence, gear selection with Shimano Di2 and plenty more. Those metrics can be displayed on up to ten customisable screens, with a maximum of ten data fields per screen, which gives you an idea of just how much data you can have at your fingertips. Speed and distance are generated by GPS, while elevation is read by the internal barometric altimeter.
The Edge 1000 is both ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart compatible, so it should work with almost any external sensor on the market, including a variety of heart rate monitors, power meters and cadence sensors.
If you ride with a power meter, a pre-loaded power-based workout on Edge 1000 allows you to calculate your functional threshold power (FTP) in order to work out your power training zones. The Edge 1000 also has a training calendar and you can create workouts (e.g. an interval session) on Garmin Connect and upload it, thus using the computer’s prompts to guide the specifics of that session.
