Mavic’s R-Sys wheelset created something of a stir on first arrival, with its traction-compression carbon fibre spokes, chunky looks and stiff but light ride characteristics. Despite proving generally reliable in service, the spokes proved fragile in some circumstances, prompting a recall at the beginning of 2009.
The R-Sys wheelset has now been re-released as the R-Sys Premium with substantially reworked Tra-Comp spokes (the non-drive side rear wheel spokes are conventional) designed to prevent the problems encountered with the original design.
The new spokes are said to be exceptionally complex and expensive to manufacture and feature a carbon-fibre fine twill exterior surface.
We got a chance to try them out them in the Highclere Castle preview ride, covering over 200km on narrow, hole- and flint-infested Hampshire lanes with plenty of hard climbing and fast descending. First impressions are, oddly enough, every bit as impressive as with the original wheels: light at around 1350g per pair, stiff and effective at power transfer on climbs and under power and offering exceptional directional control on high-speed descents. The test rider also proved fastest on the descents, suggesting that the aerodynamics of the R-Sys front wheel’s thick spokes are better than many suspect.
Price for 2009 is £1100 per pair, split £500/£600 front/rear. More details to follow…
