Team Sky’s Elia Viviani was king of the sprinters at the 2015 Tour of Britain, picking up three stage wins in Wrexham, Kelso and London.
A new signing for Team Sky for the 2015 season, Viviani’s Tour of Britain hat-trick doubled the Italian sprinter’s tally for his debut season in black and blue, having left Cannondale in the winter.
That switch also meant the Italian swapped his Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi-Mod for Team Sky’s Pinarello Dogma F8.

Elia Viviani's Pinarello Dogma F8
Italian sprinter Elia Viviani's switch to Team Sky for the 2015 season meant swapping Cannondale's SuperSix Evo Hi-Mod for the Pinarello Dogma F8. Since joining Sky, Viviani has bagged six wins, with his Tour of Britain hat-trick following victories at the Dubai Tour, Giro d'Italia and Eneco Tour.
Viviani is one of two Italians on the Team Sky roster, alongside Salvatore Puccio. Italian firm Pinarello have sponsored the team from the get-go in 2010 with the Dogma F8 having replaced the Pinarello Dogma 65.1 Think 2 ahead of last year's Tour de France. Not afraid to exalt their creation, Pinarello say the Dogma F8 is 47 per cent more aerodynamic, 120g lighter and 12 per cent stiffer than its predecessor.
Fast kit for a fast rider
While the majority of Team Sky riders use an all-aluminium cockpit, Viviani prefers the carbon fibre PRO Vibe Sprint stem. The oversized stem is popular with sprinters thanks to its supreme stiffness and was previously used by Mark Cavendish in his HTC days, while Marcel Kittel is another fan.
Here's another look at that PRO Vibe Sprint stem, which has a face plate designed to resist flexing - important for a sprinter when yanking on the handlebars at full gas. The super-stiff stem clamps Viviani's aluminium handlebar, decorated with Team Sky's trademark blue band. A K-Edge out-front mount is ready to accept Vivani's Garmin computer.
Team Sky are sponsored by Shimano and Viviani's bike is equipped with a full Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupset, with the 53-39t chainset paired with an 11-28t cassette. Besides a new frame for 2015, Shimano components are another change for Viviani from last season, when his Cannondale wore SRAM Red kit.
However, while the vast majority of Team Sky riders also use Shimano Dura-Ace pedals, Viviani prefers Speedplay pedals. Team Sky use Stages power meters, with Viviani's just about visible on the non-driveside crank.
Team Sky's sponsorship agreement with Shimano extends to wheels (and, as we saw earlier, cockpit components), with PRO a subsidiary of the Japanese company. Viviani's bike is pictured here with the mid-depth C50 hoops, a popular all-round choice in the peloton as they strike a balance between low weight and aerodynamics. Speaking of aerodynamics, the Dogma F8's ONDA F8 fork is based on the fork used for the Bolide time trial bike, and said to create 54 per cent less drag than the previous version.
Pro riders are notoriously fussy when it comes to bike fit, with everything measured to the millimetre. A Team Sky-branded sticker marks Vivani's saddle height. The Pinarello Dogma F8 zero setback seatpost is unique to the bike and pairs an ovalised front section with a truncated rear - another design which intends to improve aerodynamics. The seatpost is topped with a Fizik Arione 00 saddle, which has a carbon base and carbon rails.
We also used the opportunity to also check out the machine of Viviani's team-mate, Wout Poels, showing the cockpit setup we're used to seeing on Team Sky bikes, with an alloy stem and handlebar. Poels, who won stage five and finished second overall, uses a relatively short stem for a pro rider at 117mm (they regularly go up to 130mm or even 140mm), measured to the millimetre - we told you pros are exact with their bike fit.
Garmin provide the team's bike computers, with the Edge 510 providing all the data required. After all, there's no need for the mapping feature of the top-of-the-range Edge 1000 computer in a race. The name of each rider and their national flag adds a personal touch - and, of course, makes it easy to identify each computer before and after a stage.
When we spotted Poels' bike it was ready for the warm-up on Wahoo's Kickr turbo trainer. Team Sky renewed their partnership with Wahoo at the start of the season and they use the Kickr turbo trainer to warm up and warm down at every race.
