Unveiled in August 2008, electronic Dura Ace – known as Digital Integrated Intelligence or simply Di2 – is the result of a five year project by componentry manufacturer Shimano.
The new shift-by-wire system is claimed to be faster than traditional cable-operated systems. Requiring less effort and far less finger movement, it automatically trims and adjusts itself. And the gradual performance degradation caused by cable housing wear or contamination is completely eliminated.
The new groupset has until now been reserved for use by a handful of pro cyclists, but with production stock due to reach the UK shortly, this exciting technology will soon be available to mere mortals. A full Di2 groupset will priced at £2,934.81.
Stock is due to hit the shelves mid-summer. Until then almost impossible even to try out, the new technology will, during the month of May, be available for test in store at the Evans Cycles Canary Wharf branch.
“We’re expecting a lot of interest in the new gearing system” says Store Manager Craig Outhwaite, “This is a giant leap in bicycle technology and a very exciting sign of things to come.”
The test bike will be set up on a trainer where visitors to the store can try the new components out for themselves.
