Wireless monitoring of Shimano’s Di2 electronic shifting systems, allowing riders to view gear position, battery life and other common rider data functions from a handlebar-mounted computer, will be offered by the Japanese giant’s new “D-Fly” unit.
The retro-fit Di2 Wireless Unit features the new Shimano D-Fly Data Management system, which the Japanese firm says will add another dimension to the experience of its electronic shifting systems.
Compatible with the Dura-Ace 9070, Ultegra 6870 Di2, and Ultegra 6770 electronic shifting systems, all of which use the proprietary E-Tube connection, the unit wirelessly connects users to their Di2 data using a cycling computer.
It can be easily plugged into the E-tube wiring system, and the unit – called SM-EWW01 – connects Di2-equipped bikes to a compatible wireless cycle computer.
Weighing less than five grams, it is a slender device, measuring just 38mm long, 25mm wide, and 12.5mm in height.
It is powered by the same Di2 battery which drives the Di2 shifting system, and transmits data through a proprietary private ANT wireless protocol.
Although upon its introduction the unit will only be compatible with the SCIO ANY+ cycling computer – the new 80-gram cycling computer from Shimano house brand PRO – it is intended to increase its compatibility to include other cycling computers throughout the first period of the year.
It will be available in the UK from March 2014 onwards, costing £69.99.
