Combining a competition-style mesh and leather panel upper with a “slimline” outsole designed to accept SPD-style twin-bolt steel cleats and permit comfortable walking, the new SH-RT81 shoe from Shimano looks tailor-made for the demands of cyclosportive riding, where absolute performance is not the priority and the ability to walk around at the start and finish and at feed stations is of real use.
The outsole, which will be familiar to owners of Shimano road touring shoes of the last couple of years, works in the same way as an mtb sole; the cleat sits between rubber strips that provide secure foot placement both on the pedal and when walking or standing while at the same time protecting the cleat from the ground.
Unlike an mtb outsole, that of the RT81 is smoothly contoured with a minimum rubber content to save weight and provide support only where it is needed. White rubber heel and toe wear bars ensure a long service life. The midsole is moulded in a stiff black plastic that provides more than enough stiffness for most cycling needs. The shoe feels stiff enough for moderate competition use.
Although the shoe is compatible with any SPD-style pedal, recommended pedals are Shimano’s single-sided PD-A600 and PD-A520 models.
The upper employs Shimano’s regular construction technique of coated leather panels supporting a mesh fabric. Closure is through two Velcro-style staps and a micro-adjust buckle-secured strap, allowing fine adjustment while riding.
The shoe is offered in one colourway – bronze and white – and in EU sizes 39 to 48 with size 40 weighing a claimed 682g per pair.
