Gilet
Gilet
A good, lightweight gilet is an essential item in any summer wardrobe, providing protection from the wind on cool mornings and on long descents, when the sweat build-up from the preceding climb can quickly chill you to the bone.
Many gilets are also water resistant, providing enough protection from a short shower without having to pull on a full rain jacket, or when there’s consistent, but light, drizzle in the air.
A summer gilet should be light enough to be scrunched up into a small ball so it can be easily tucked away into a jersey pocket. Versatility is key.
dhb’s Ultralight gilet (a favourite in my wardrobe) is just that, while the Nalini Talco gilet weighs just 69g. Craft’s Elite vest, meanwhile, has a windproof front and mesh back to help prevent overheating.
Sportful’s Hot Pack Ultralight Vest offers an impossibly light and compact gilet which belies its 39g weight to do an excellent job of windproofing too.
