Exercise and diet should complement each other
Exercise and diet should complement each other
It is a well-versed concept that diet is little without exercise, but it is especially important to keep the workload at a good level if you have big goals on the bike.
Dieting doesn’t just take fat off the body, but muscle mass, too, so weight loss can be deceiving when it comes to weighing yourself.
“Diet and exercise are both equally valuable,” Mitchell tells us. “If you don’t exercise, and you’re not moving your body then when you lose weight you will lose lean tissue and muscle and not just fat.
“People will get on the scales and see they’ve lost two kilos, when actually they’ve only lost a kilo of fat.”
Exercise also boosts the body’s ability to rebuild muscle, complementing the proteins which Mitchell says are key to any diet.
He adds: “When you’re exercising, it increases the protein synthesis or the muscle rebuilding. The other thing that’s really important when people are trying to cut the calories is to make sure you are getting really good protein foods in.
“Again, this is to protect the muscle. When I say good protein foods, the dairy-based protein products are the best. We work with CNP and one of the reasons we work with them is that their protein is among the best of the companies that are out there.”
