After solid performances in the past two Paris-Roubaix Classics, Roger Hammond has been signed up by Discovery. Since winning the World Junior Cyclo Cross Championship in 1988 Hammond has steadily built a career in Belgium, riding for small teams but producing some excellent results – with top ten finishes at cyclo-cross world championships and several Pro road races – most notable being his 3rd place in this year’s ‘Hell of the North’.
This long awaited news will mean he could get the support he deserves in the Spring Classics from the strong US backed team. Classics star George Hincapie has also re-signed, the New Yorker stating he wants Lance Armstrong to ride some of the classics too, so look out Belgium…
Hammond used the Vuelta Burgos in Spain for his final tune up before competing in the Olympic road race. At the Vuelta he finished 3rd on the final stage and 80th overall.
The British team is probably the strongest we’ve had in many years with Jeremy Hunt, Charly Wegelius and Julian Winn backing up the British Champ who seems to be in great form.
