Down but not out…
Dean Downing (Recycling.co.uk) had a unfourtunate time in the Lancaster round of the Wachovia Cycling Series in the USA. Apparently he wiped out after hitting a 6in deep grate with both wheels at 60kmp/h, smashing both wheels. He has a broken right collarbone and thumb as a result of the crash. They have pinned his thumb and he will have his collarbone operated on when he returns to the UK. If you want to send Deano a message of support, you can do at deandowning.co.uk
Hamilton launches appeal over ban
According to the BBC website:
American cyclist Tyler Hamilton has gone to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to appeal against a two-year ban for a blood doping violation.
Hamilton tested positive on 11 September at the Spanish Vuelta, a month after he won the time-trial gold medal at the Athens Olympics.
He was banned by the American Arbitration Association on 18 April. “He requests CAS to exonerate him, considering that he did not commit any doping offence,” the court said.
Hamilton has continually protested his innocence and has criticised the testing method used by the Union Cycliste International, cycling’s international governing body. The American tested positive with his initial blood sample at the Athens Olympics but the case was dropped because his B sample was mistakenly frozen and could not be analysed.
CAS usually delivers an appeal verdict within four months of one being submitted.
Brentwood Crits this weekend
Head to the Essex town this weekend as many of the UK’s top riders will be in action on the short and tight criterium circuit around the town centre. The day features a round of BC’s circuit series. HQ at Courage Hall, Brentwood School. It’s worth going as you can see the action up close and there’s a Pub on the circuit! The Junior race should be a cracker, with many of the Glendene local boys looking for the win. The Junior race shows the level of talent we currently have in the UK, so this race will be one not to miss.
