Glasgow World Cup: two golds and a silver for Great Britain on opening day

Great Britain has won two gold medals on the opening day of the second round of the UCI Track World Cup 2012/13 in Glasgow.

Jess Varnish and Becky James took a comfortable win in the women’s team sprint, while Elinor Barker, Laura Trott, and Dani King were dominant in the women’s team pursuit.

And there was silver for the home nation, competing in the first international event at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, when a men’s team sprint line up of Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny, and Ed Clancy were beaten in the final by Germany.

But the men’s team pursuit squad crashed out of the competition when three of a four-strong quartet including Sam Harrison, Joe Kelly, and Andy Tennant, hit the boards in a qualifying heat. Owain Doull alone remained upright after a touch of wheels behind him.

Jon Dibben, who recently joined British Cycling’s Academy, lies eleventh overall at the end of the first day of competition in the men’s omnium.
