Four medals for Brits at Track World Champs

Team GB opened up its medal account at the Track Cycling World Championships in Poland last night with two silver and two bronze medals.

With no Rebecca Romero all eyes were on Wendy Houvenaghel in the Women’s Individual Pursuit. After setting a blistering pace in qualifying, she was unable to repeat that in the final and was squeezed off the top step of the podium by New Zealander Alison Shanks who posted a personal best of 3.29.807. Young Joanna Rowsell finished a strong fourth place and sign of greater things to come.

Victoria Pendleton’s first medal came with a bronze in the Women’s 500m TT, in a final that saw Lithuanian rider Simona Krupeckaite break the world record to win gold in a time of 33.396. Australian Anna Meare’s, whose previous world record in this event had stood for five years, picked up the silver medal.

In the Men’s Points Race Chris Newton won a bronze medal. Despite looking strong through the majority of the 150-lap race, Newton was unable to pick up enough points in a hard race that saw the heavily marked rider struggle to control the race. Australian Cameron Meyer took gold with Daniel Kreutzfeldt silver.

With Sir Chris Hoy sitting out the World Champs due to an injury picked up in the last World Cup, the Men’s Team Sprint had to tackle the event without him. The large pool of young talented riders rising through the ranks meant that, while it’s impossible to fill Hoy’s shoes, a strong team was able to contest and walked away with a silver medal.

Led out by Jamie Staff, Jason Kenny and Matt Crampton took the race close but the French took were just a little bit stronger and took the gold medal. Germany took Bronze.
