It was business as usual as far of stage six of the Giro d’Italia was concerned, with Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) outsprinting Elia Viviani (Cannondale Pro Cycling) and Matthew Goss (Orica-GreenEDGE) to claim his second stage of the 2013 race.
Opportunities for a bunch sprint are limited in the 96th edition of Giro and Cavendish seized his chance with both hands after what the Manx Missile described as a “perfect” leadout from his Omega Pharma-QuickStep team-mates.
Victory for Cavendish sees the 27-year-old return to the top of the red jersey classification on 58 points, ahead of Viviani (52 points) and race leader Luca Paolini (35 points).
These pictures from Stefano Sirotti tell the story of Cavendish’s 99th as a professional, 12th win at the Giro d’Italia and 38th triumph in a Grand Tour.
