After narrowly missing out on a gold medal in the individual pursuit, there was gold medal success for Wendy Houvenaghel in the women’s team pursuit. Partnered by Lizzie Armitstead and Joanna Rowsell, the three produced a strong performance with a time of 3.22.720 to keep the New Zealand team at bay. Austrialia took the bronze.
There was another medal for Team GB in the women’s team sprint, but of the silver persuasion. Victoria Pendleton and Shanaze Reade were up against the Austrialian partnering of Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch, but were half a second down after the first lap effort of Reade and despite Pendleton clawing back a couple of tenths, they just weren’t quick enough.
Fresh from his win at Milan-San Remo last week, ace sprinter Mark Cavendish was in action on day 2 of the World Track Championships in Poland yesterday. The 23-year-old rider was taking part in the scratch race, but after some initial bursts of speed and looking strong, six riders managed to gel together in a breakaway that would lap the field in the 60 lap race. A gallant effort by Cavendish to reverse the damage was to no avail and the final sprint and the gold medal was won by Morgan Kneisky from France. Argentina’s Dario Colla took silver and Austrian Andreas Müller bronze.
Despite having both Ross Edgar and Matt Crampton in the final of the men’s keiren, neither were able to make a strong enough impression on their rivals, and finished outside of the medals, in fourth and fifth respectively. Germany’s Maximilian Levy took gold, Francois Pervis silver and Teun Mulder bronze.
