Once again, on the evening of Wednesday 5th July, Charlotteville Cycling Club presents the Guildford Town Centre Races supported by Godalming Cycles, with additional sponsorship from Knight Frank Estate Agents, Specialized, Sheerwater Glass, Surrey Advertiser and Evans Cycles.
It’s the highlight of this year’s Guildford Festival, the races incorporate round six of the British Cycling National Elite Men’s Circuit Race Series, currently being fought out by the country’s top road racers. This is guaranteed to bring a fast and hard-fought main event on Guildford’s notoriously tough course, with its cobbled climb up the High Street and tight, narrow corners.
The winner of the main event wins the historic Guildford Cup, last year this honour went to Warrick Spence (London Dynamo) who broke away from a very classy field of national and international riders in the final laps to win in some style. Spence is currently lying second overall in the standings and with Rob Hayles side lined with a broken collarbone, Spence could make up points on his rival for the overall series title. He’ll be a marked man.
The Guildford leg of the British Cycling Elite Men’s Circuit Race Series, sponsored by Trek, Club La Santa and Sporting Tours International, is for Elite, 1st and 2nd category riders and starts at 8pm. Prizes are being awarded after the racing concludes at around 9pm. A programme of supporting events will also be offered; the Knight Frank Criteriums featuring Juniors and 3rd category riders will start the proceedings at 7pm. Then, at 7.30pm it’s the turn of the youngsters, with Juveniles, under 16’s, under 14’s and under 12’s racing.
Please note that the race circuit will be closed to all traffic during and prior to the event. This year a temporary one-way system will be implemented in the vicinity in order to better manage the traffic flow during the event. The race circuit is as follows and contains many areas that provide perfect opportunities for spectating as well refreshment. The race circuit begins near the junction of the High Street and Chertsey Street and heads down towards North Street where the riders make a sharp left into Market Street where they climb up towards the junction with the High Street to meet the cobbles and complete the circuit.
