TESTED: Specialized Cortina Road Optics

Whether your thing is off-road trails, track or road you’ll be keen to protect your eyes from grit, grime, mud and all the other things that like to flick in your face when you’re out riding.

These light reactant road optics from Specialized will not only protect your eyes but are ideally contoured to fit the shape of a women’s face, suit all sorts of riding conditions and come in a fantastic choice of colours.

I couldn’t resist the bright pink frames which have seen me through all conditions of riding – and are great off the bike too!

The Adaptalite lenses not only provide 100% UVA and UVB protection but vary the amount of light transmission depending on how bright the riding conditions are. So, whether you’re riding on a grey winter day in England or sunning yourself on a training camp, with these petite frames you don’t have to worry about changing lenses.

The unique Specialized Adaptalite lenses make the photochromatic properties part of the lens material itself rather than being a coating, so it won’t wear off and if you scratch a lens it won’t hinder its ability to change tint. It’s also fast-acting, and claims to be unbreakable and 10-20% lighter than competing materials, as well as being optically superior.

This design is extremely versatile however is intended for use when riding on the road. They can be worn off-road as well but you may want to consider the mountain versions which use a slightly higher range of light transmission (25-65%) and are designed to enhance contrast to help pick out trail features, the road glasses have a slightly darker range and are designed to cut glare.

Vents at the side of the lenses mean that you don’t steam up the moment you stop riding and the design is angled to specifically suit the riding position so that you’re not gazing into the top of the frame rather than through the lens. We did find the frame quite chunky however and could be slightly obstructing for some riders when looking up from the drops.

Another ‘eye catching’ product from the 2006 Specialized range.
