With only four weeks remaining until the start of the Tour of Britain, the Recycling.co.uk/ Litespeed team has announced a line-up that Team Manager Phil Leigh is confident can mount a serious challenge for the tour title.
With three World Champion’s and three Olympic silver medalist’s in tow the team head into a pre-tour training camp with the hope of conquering the roads of Britain. The six-man team for this year’s tour, which starts 30th of August in Glasgow, is made up by three of the Great Britain Pursuit Team who won the World Championship pursuit event in Los Angeles earlier this year.
In professional rider’s Paul Manning, Rob Hayles and Chris Newton the Pursuit champions and all Olympic silver medalist’s, Manager Leigh believes the team has an infrastructure that has an enormous amount of talent; “This is a great opportunity for the Recycling team to ride in the showcase event in Britain. With three world champions, the British National Road Champion Russell Downing and brilliant talent in Dean Downing and Robin Sharman we believe we have the strength for all six stages in this year’s race.”
The riders who are now vacating to the hills of Lancashire to begin an intense training programme carry the hopes for the Recycling team who in recent years have become Britain’s most successful road team.
Current British National Road Champion Russell Downing is thrilled to be able to ride this year’s tour in the ‘National Championship Jersey’; “Riding for the Great Britain team last year was fantastic but this year, being able to ride for my own team, Recycling and in the ‘National Jersey’ is just amazing. I and the rest of the team have been training really hard for this tour, especially as it’s on our own turf and I am sure we will get some great results.”
