Wales’ Becky James claimed women’s 500m time trial bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
The 18-year-old, world junior keirin and sprint champion, clocked 35.236 seconds, while Australia’s Anna Meares defended her title in a Commonwealth record of 33.758 and her compatriot Kaarle McCulloch claimed silver in 34.780.
“I can’t explain how happy I am,” James told the BBC. “I wasn’t sure I would get a medal. A bronze in my first Commonwealth Games is unbelievable.
“The Aussie girls are always so strong and to be honest I didn’t expect to beat them. But to come and get a bronze medal here I can’t even put it into words – I’m so happy.”
Australia claimed five podium finishes on the first day of track cycling to dominate the medal table.
Jack Bobridge set the fourth fastest individual pursuit on record, clocking 4:14.845 minutes in qualifying.
The 21-year-old’s personal best stands at 4:14.427 from the Australian National Track Championships earlier this year.
Only Chris Boardman has gone quicker, twice at the 1996 World Championships, with the world record standing at 4:11.114 – but the three-time Tour de France stage winner was using the now banned Superman position.
