Northern Ireland’s Wendy Houvenaghel was forced to settle for individual pursuit silver yet again on the final day of track cycling at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Houvenaghel finished second behind Rebecca Romero at the 2008 Olympic Games and stood on the second step at both the 2009 and 2010 World Championships.

The 35-year-old, twice a team pursuit world champion, clocked 3:32.137 minutes in India, while New Zealand’s Alison Shanks took victory in 3:30.875.

“I started with a strategy in mind, bearing in mind, I had two races in quick succession. I was confident so in my first ride, I held back for the final,” said Houvenaghel.

“The qualifying ride gave me a lot of confidence going into the final.

“I rode as I normally would have but when she got ahead of me, I had nothing left to get the win back so I had to just get to the finish line as fast as I could.

“I left no stone unturned, I’ve got my silver medals and I’ve got to be content and open a new chapter now.”

Meanwhile, Australia’s men – Daniel Ellis, Jason Niblett and Scott Sunderland – won the team sprint title in 43.772 seconds ahead of New Zealand, while Malaysia collected bronze.

And Cameron Meyer bagged his third gold of the Games with victory in the men’s scratch race ahead of team-mate Michael Frieberg and Canadian Zach Bell.

The 22-year-old claimed points gold on Wednesday and topped the team pursuit podium with Jack Bobridge, Michael Hepburn and Dale Parker on Thursday.

And Meyer completed his golden hat-trick in style on Friday to take Australia’s gold medal tally to 12 from a possible 14.

The men’s and women’s road races – at 168km and 112km respectively – will take place on Sunday, while the men’s and women’s time trials – 29km and 40km – complete the cycling schedule on Monday.
