Leopard-Trek’s Wouter Weylandt has died after crashing on a descent during stage three of the Giro d’Italia.
The Belgian fell on the Passo del Bocco and, while unconscious, was given CPR by paramedics before being airlifted to hospital where doctors were unable to save him.
Tributes soon flooded in from professionals and fans alike.
“Things like this shouldn’t happen,” tweeted Mark Cavendish. “Absolutely sick to the stomach. My thoughts are with his family. RIP Wouter Weylandt.”
The 26-year-old Weylandt began his career with Quick Step in 2004 and won stage 17 of the 2008 Vuelta a Espana, his first Grand Tour, before claiming stage three of last year’s Giro. He joined the Leopard-Trek squad ahead of the 2011 season.
“Today, our team-mate and friend Wouter Weylandt passed away after a crash on the third stage of the Giro d’Italia,” read a Leopard-Trek statement.
“The team is left in a state of shock and sadness and we send all our thoughts and deepest condolences to the family and friends of Wouter.
“This is a difficult day for cycling and for our team, and we should all seek support and strength in the people close to us.”
Angel Vicioso (Movistar) went on to win stage three ahead of David Millar (Garmin-Cervelo), who moved into the overall lead. Giro organisers cancelled the podium ceremonies before the news was announced.
Our thoughts are with Wouter Weylandts’ family, friends and team-mates.
